Other than your beans and your water, the MOST important aspect of brewing great coffee is...

GRIND SIZE AND CONSISTENCY!

Of course, our high quality, freshly-roasted beans and good, clean, filtered water help a ton too...

When it comes to brewing coffee, here are some tips for getting started on the right track:

  1. Buy fresh roasted whole bean (locally roasted is even better) coffee

  2. Grind right before you brew.

  3. Always use a "burr" grinder rather than a "blade grinder"

  4. The importance of grind size and consistency cannot be overstated. When it comes to your setup, your grinder should be the single piece of coffee equipment that you invest the most $ in. Luckily, your money is well spent as good quality burr grinders can last for THOUSANDS of pounds of coffee!

  5. When you buy a new grinder, it might take 3-5kg (~8-10lbs) of coffee to "season" the burrs before the grind is truly consistent. Be sure to buy some cheap "grinder seasoning" beans to accomplish this. The sooner you do it after your grinder purchase, the faster you will achieve consistent grind sizing that will last the entire life of your burrs.

  6.  You might experiment with different grinders and grind sizes to find your ideal cup/taste profile.

  7. In general, I recommend grinders with "stepless" grind adjustments for brewing espresso, and "stepped" grind adjustments for almost all other methods works just fine.
